Or could it be something more?

In recent days, millions of users across Europe have been following with concern a case that began with a series of unusual listings on the well-known resale platform Vinted.

Children’s toys, clothing, and other items appeared for sale at outrageous prices, accompanied, in some cases, by descriptions that seemed more like descriptions of children than product descriptions.

Within hours, screenshots flooded TikTok, Instagram, Reddit, and X. Theories multiplied. Some spoke of a coded child-trafficking network. Others suggested organised fraud. Others argued that it was a carefully staged online hoax fuelled by the dynamics of social media.

Meanwhile, French judicial authorities confirmed that they were conducting a preliminary investigation, while Vinted announced that it was cooperating with the authorities, stating that, so far, it had found no evidence linking the listings in question to child trafficking. The company also said that, after the phenomenon emerged, new fraudulent listings appeared that seemed to have been created solely to intensify the panic or exploit the publicity surrounding the case.

This very contradiction is what makes the case particularly important.

We are not dealing solely with a possible criminal investigation. We are looking at a characteristic example of how information emerges, evolves, and is reproduced in the digital age, where real events, speculation, and misinformation coexist and interact.

Why HateOFF Is Launching This Investigation

At HateOFF, we believe that addressing misinformation does not mean dismissing every alarming claim as false, nor accepting every viral narrative as true without question.

Journalistic and scientific responsibility requires something different: examining the available evidence, evaluating sources, distinguishing verified facts from speculation, and informing the public transparently.

The Vinted case is an ideal case study because it lies at the intersection of:

digital crime,

online platform data-end="3244">and the responsibility of users themselves in reproducing information.

What We Know So Far

At the time of publication of this article, the following can be considered verified:

Listings appeared on Vinted with extremely high prices and unusual descriptions.

The case went viral across several European countries through social media.

French data-start="3921" data-end="3997">It is equally important to acknowledge the questions that remain open:

Were all of the listings authentic?

Were some created solely to cause viral?

How did this particular narrative spread so quickly?

There are no substantiated answers to these questions yet.

The Investigation Methodology

This investigation will not be based on rumours or isolated screenshots.

HateOFF will follow a specific methodology that includes:

collecting and evaluating open-source data-end="4843">reviewing relevant European legislation, particularly the Digital Services Act,

drawing on academic literature on misinformation, moral panic, confirmation bias, and the phenomenon of digital vigilantism.

A Case That Goes Beyond Vinted

Regardless of the investigation’s eventual outcome, this case has already highlighted a broader issue: how easily information can spread globally before the investigation itself has even been completed.

The balance between vigilance in the face of potential risks and responsible information management is now one of the greatest challenges of the digital age.

Through this investigation, HateOFF does not seek to confirm or disprove predetermined narratives. Our aim is to document the facts, highlight unanswered questions, and follow the development of the case with transparency, scientific rigour, and respect for the truth.

The Investigation Continues

This is the first part of a broader investigative series. Cases That Were Proven Genuine

1. Backpage.com (USA)

The Backpage case is perhaps the most significant example of the abuse of a legitimate digital platform.

Following years of investigation, US authorities concluded that the platform had been systematically used for listings connected to sexual exploitation and human trafficking. The case led to the closure of the website and criminal charges against executives.

The case even influenced US legislation, contributing to the passage of the FOSTA-SESTA legislation.

Conclusion: Yes, a legitimate digital platform can be abused by criminal networks.

2. Craigslist – Adult Services

The “Adult Services” section also became the subject of intense public criticism and police investigations. Although the platform was not accused of having been designed for illegal activities, increasing pressure eventually led to the permanent removal of that category of listings.

3. Telegram

Reports by Europol and UNODC have documented cases in which criminal networks used encrypted communication applications to recruit victims, exchange illegal material, and coordinate criminal activities.

The existence of such cases does not mean that these applications are inherently criminal. It does, however, highlight a reality: criminal organisations follow technological developments and move to wherever users are.

4. Facebook Marketplace

Cases have been documented in which it was used for fraud or to approach potential victims, without the platform itself being designed for such activities.

II. Cases That Went Viral but Were Not Proven

Wayfair (2020)

In 2020, Wayfair became the focus of a global theory claiming that extremely expensive furniture listings were coded advertisements for child trafficking.

The theory spread rapidly, fuelled by thousands of posts and videos across social media.

However, despite the widespread circulation of these claims, no evidence emerged confirming that the product listings were connected to human trafficking.

The case is a characteristic example of how the speed of digital information can outpace verification.

Etsy

Similar claims have circulated from time to time without being substantiated.

eBay

Satirical or false listings have appeared and gone viral, without any proven connection to trafficking.

III. The New Vinted Case

The Vinted case appears to sit somewhere between the two previous categories.

5. Vinted: A Case That Remains Open

Unlike the previous cases, the Vinted case is still under investigation.

So far, we know that:

there are listings that child trafficking through the platform.

This makes the case an ideal example for examining the delicate balance between necessary vigilance and avoiding premature conclusions.

How do criminal data-start="2504" data-end="2633">The involvement of international organisations such as Interpol has not been confirmed beyond claims circulating on social media.

The HateOFF Position

Journalistic and scientific responsibility requires us to clearly distinguish facts from assumptions.

<p
