The #AtomwaffenDivision, also known as #Atomwaffen, is a symbol originating from a neo-Nazi group that emerged in 2016 and was founded by members of #IronMarch, a now-defunct online discussion forum focused on White Supremacy.
It was one of several new neo-Nazi groups whose rise coincided with the post-2015 growth of the far-right wing of the White Supremacist movement. The #Atomwaffen symbol is notable for its extreme rhetoric, influenced by the writings of an earlier-generation neo-Nazi, #JamesMason, who admired #CharlesManson and promoted the idea of “Lone Wolf” violence. Members of #Atomwaffen have been linked to several murders during the group's relatively short history.
The German word #Atomwaffen means “atomic weapons.” The #Atomwaffen logo consists of a shield incorporating elements from #WaffenSS insignia, together with a triskelion, the traditional symbol used to warn of ionizing radiation. The shield is often, though not always, surrounded by a wreath, a common decorative element found around many White Supremacist logos. The #Atomwaffen flag features the shield and wreath at the center on a black background, with four yellow rays extending from the shield/wreath toward each corner of the flag.
