The 88 is a White Supremacist numerical symbol, perhaps the most widespread and recognizable, as it represents “Heil Hitler.” As mentioned previously, H is the eighth letter of the Latin alphabet, therefore 88 = HH = Heil Hitler.
One of the most common symbols of White Supremacy, 88 is used throughout the White Supremacist movement, and not exclusively by Neo-Nazis. It may appear as a tattoo or graphic symbol; as part of the name of a group, publication, or website; or as part of a screen name or email address. It is sometimes even used as a greeting or sign-off code, particularly in messages on social media websites.
The number is often combined with another White Supremacist numerical code, 14 (an abbreviation for the so-called “14 Words”: “We must secure the existence of our people and a future for White children”), in forms such as 1488, 14/88, 14-88, or 8814.
It should be noted that 88 can also clearly appear in non-extremist contexts. Radio operators use the number to mean “hugs” or “hugs and kisses.” In addition, several NASCAR drivers, including many highly well-known ones, have used the number 88, resulting in various car decals and other forms of merchandise featuring the number.
88 Symbol with Hands
It is not surprising that White Supremacists occasionally attempt to represent 88 with their hands in photographs so that it is less easily detected by social media filters. It is not a particularly common hand symbol, probably because it requires some dexterity and effort to bring the fingers of both hands together to form it.
