The Aryan Brotherhood, #AryanBrotherhood, or AB for short, is the oldest and most notorious racist prison gang in the United States, originating in California in the 1960s.
It is primarily present in California prisons and federal prisons. Many other prison gangs now also use the “Aryan Brotherhood” name as part of their identity, such as the #AryanBrotherhoodofTexas, but these are independent organizations and are not affiliated with the original Aryan Brotherhood.
Because of its longevity, members of the Aryan Brotherhood have adopted a variety of symbols and codes. However, the most common symbol associated with the Aryan Brotherhood remains a shamrock, often combined with a #swastika. Members of the Aryan Brotherhood also frequently use the initials #AB or their alphanumeric equivalents, 1 and 2, or 12, including Roman-numeral forms. Another relatively common identifier is the use of the number 666, often referred to as the “number of the beast.”
