The keyboards on #Twitter have been “on fire,” with thousands of people reacting to the appearance of the new Greek National Team jersey. Many have perceived a swastika, prompting wordplay around the National Team becoming “Nationalist Greece” in connection with #Euro2024.
The unveiling of the new Greek National Team jersey sparked considerable debate. The kit made its debut in the team’s opening qualifying match for Euro 2024, against Gibraltar.
Presented under the slogan “All of Greece in one jersey,” the new design was unveiled by the team’s coach, Gustavo Poyet, who revealed the new pattern featured on the shirt.
However, the design apparently failed to impress everyone, with some seeing a resemblance to the flag of Finland, while others saw a swastika.
One of the first reactions came from the Greek Political Party "MeRA25", which, in a statement, described the design as a “cross with hooked ends.”
The statement described the jersey as “yet another dangerous, vulgar, and unacceptable act of fascistization,” while also referencing a lyric by Greek satirist and musician Jimis Panousis: “Bars, bars, bars everywhere, and minds behind the bars of the invisible enemy…” The statement went on to say that “the whole nation bows before underwear and jerseys.” It continued by criticizing the Hellenic Football Federation (EPO), under then-president Vangelis Baltakos, accusing it of placing a huge cross with hooked ends on the jersey. “On the one hand, the government introduces extremely anti-democratic and dangerous amendments, supposedly to prevent Nazis from entering Parliament, while on the other it does everything it can to normalize them in society,” the MeRA25 statement concluded.
